![]() Courtesy of Air Canada The news comes on the heels of a recent report conducted by the Orange County Business Council, which highlighted the positive economic impact the airport's improvement program will have on the region. And the new service further boosts O.C.'s tourism industry. "We think this service will be popular with Orange County travelers, and we are excited to add a new nonstop destination to our offerings," Wedge says. Air Canada will offer one flight per day on a 120-seat Airbus A319. The first flight will arrive Thursday evening from Toronto, and the first departure from JWA will take place Friday morning. The airline will perform all customs and immigration screenings in Canada, but once Terminal C is completed in 2011, Wedge says the local airport will be equipped with Federal Inspection Services and Customs, which will allow for greater international service. Though there are no other plans currently in the works, she expects discussion to pick up early in 2011. Wedge does say that service will be limited to destinations like Central America, Mexico and Canada, due to the airport's runway length. The local airport serves about 9 million passengers a year, and construction is well under way on its more than $540 million improvement program, which aims to support the growing number of travelers passing through the destination, as well as upgrade its facilities to provide continued customer satisfaction. The program is expected to add about 6,670 jobs in O.C. and have an economic impact of more than $1 billion, according to the recent OCBC study.
