![]() The What's Hot Now report shows that 57 percent of those polled are likely to consider purchasing an electric, hybrid or high-mpg vehicle in the next year. Another 75 percent either intend to purchase or might consider buying a green auto in two to five years, according to the report. In addition, 51 percent of consumers cite the economy and better gas mileage as the top reasons for going green, while 39 percent list being environmentally responsible and reducing the nation's dependence on foreign oil as major concerns. “Consumers are interested in being fiscally and environmentally responsible when considering their next vehicle purchase,” said Jeff Coats, president and CEO of Autobytel. "Our latest What’s Hot Now report reveals good news for the makers of alternative-energy and high-mpg vehicles." Here's a look at some of the highlights of the survey, which was conducted in July and drew more than 2,000 respondents: • Gas prices impact vehicle-purchase choices for 80 percent of respondents. • 73 percent of consumers under the age of 25 actively are considering a green-car purchase in the next year, and more than 80 percent intend to purchase or might consider buying an eco-friendly vehicle in the next two to five years. • 38 percent of respondents favor gas-electric hybrids, while another 14 percent are most likely to consider small, high-MPG vehicles. Electric plugins and fuel cells came in at 11 and 9 percent, respectively.
