Total sales reached more than $15 million during last weekend's Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, as nearly 400 customs, classics, hot rods and original models hit the block at the O.C. fairgrounds.

Held June 25-27, the inaugural event drew nearly 58,000 auto enthusiasts and featured a live auction – 18 hours of which were broadcast on SPEED TV – a ride-in drive, a smattering of lifestyle activities, and it even raised more than $1 million for charity.

Top-selling cars included a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 Convertible, which went for $253,000, followed by a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Custom Coupe, selling for $250,000. Among the others: a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Custom Two-door Hardtop; 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible; and a 1940 Willys Custom Two-door Coupe.

“All eyes were on our first auction in Orange County this weekend,” said Steve Davis, president of Scottsdale-based Barrett-Jackson Auction Co., which produced the event. “Barrett-Jackson is a barometer for the collector-car market and people were excited to see what trends would emerge."

Though the auction is new to Orange County, Barrett-Jackson has been successfully producing its events in Scottsdale, Palm Beach and Las Vegas since its inception in 1971.

"This auction proved true to SoCal as bidders went for classics, restomods and customs that they could cruise around in," added Davis. "It’s not surprising that those types of vehicles would be in such demand since Southern California is the birthplace of hot-rodding.”

About 58 percent of bidders were first-time buyers, while 57 percent were first-time consignors.

"Our Orange County auction was designed to tap into SoCal’s car culture and introduce more people to the hobby," said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of the company. "(Bidders are) coming to Barrett-Jackson because of the great cars and the confidence inspiring transparency that you can only find at our auctions."

Looking ahead, organizers expect to bring the event back to the region on an annual basis.

“We’re absolutely delighted with this year’s results," said Jackson, "and look forward to building on this year’s success in 2011.”

Readers Feedback:

B-Jackson "building on this years event". Yeah sure, if they can get anyone crazy enough to consign. The June OC Auction was a success only to B-J and a few Sat prime time SpeedVision sellers. While the B-J crew did a very good and organized job of handling the consigned cars, the Auction itself was an unmitigated disaster for most all of the FridaySat/Sunday non prime time sellers, who lost their shirts. I doubt if any car are there to sell IF there is a next year. Robert DeMars
