Broadcom speeds up digital TV channel-change speeds

Irvine-based firm's new FastRTV platform makes the process five times faster.

Irvine-based chipmaker Broadcom Corp. has launched a new technology aimed at making the channel-change speed on digital TVs faster – nearly instantaneous, in fact.

The FastRTV Channel Change Acceleration platform can speed up the process by up to five times its current rate and reduces delays or pauses while flipping through different stations.

"Our new FastRTV technology greatly enhances the viewer's TV experience, creating quick channel changes and near instant response time that in turn ends the frustration caused by slow channel surfing," said Dan Marotta, executive vice president and general manager of Broadcom's Broadband Communications Group.

The platform is available in the company's chip systems for digital cable set-top boxes and universal digital transport adapters.

"Service providers will appreciate an easy deployment that creates a compelling and attractive feature for increasing customer loyalty and satisfaction," added Marotta.

Broadcom, which had net revenue of $1.6 billion in the second quarter, is among the world's largest fabless communications semiconductor companies.
