Chapman University's student advertising team has won the Southern California and Southern Nevada district-level American Advertising Federation competition for the second year in a row.

Chapman defeated eight university and college teams, including UC Irvine, USC and UCLA, during the District 15 showdown, which was held at UCI in April. UCLA garnered second place, while UCI took third.

The students will now face teams from 14 other districts at the American Advertising Federation's National Student Advertising Competition in Orlando, Fla., in June.

The platform offers participants real-world experience and readies advertising students for careers in the industry.

This year, more than 3,000 students across the U.S. were challenged to develop a $40 million communications campaign to boost State Farm Insurance's 18- to 24-year-old audience. Students were tasked with making the firm more appealing for a young-adult audience, thereby upping brand awareness and sales among the age range.

State Farm provided a case study outlining key goals of the campaign, including developing multifaceted platforms to spur growth in young-adult auto and renters' policies, as well as retention of auto policies.
