A new report from Chapman University's A. Gary Anderson Center for Economic Research shows that local nonprofit arts organizations' economic impact on Orange County is $483.8 million – up about 15.3 percent from the previous study, which was conducted in 2006. However, these institutions are more pessimistic about the future, with audiences, private support and a balanced budget among the major concerns.

The 2010 Economic Impact of the Nonprofit Arts on Orange County includes stats from 26 organizations polled between June and August of this year and looks at attendance and employment; income and expenses; and projections and future challenges, among other categories, based on revenue for the last fiscal year, most often ending in December 2009.

Findings show that nonprofit arts organizations employed a total of 3,624 paid positions, making the industry a major employer in O.C. In fact, taken as a whole, the organizations are the county's 23rd largest non-government employer.

Additionally, full-time employment at such organizations increased to 643 between the 2006 and 2010 reports, up about 19.1 percent in the period.

Paid admissions and total contributions also were among the factors that increased in the period, though the average price for a ticket fell 15.6 percent to $24.6. The drop contributed to a 5.8 percent decline in admissions revenues. The most recent survey shows that numbers total $46.8 million.

Looking ahead, arts organizations expect total income to drop to $138.2 million in 2010, down 1.6 percent from 2009, and contributions are expected to fall 6.6 percent to $53.7 million.

Here's a look at some of the other highlights:

• Of the 2.4 million total admissions, about 27 percent were free.
• The average paid admission for a performing arts event was $30.1, $23.8 for other events and $11.2 for museums.
• Volunteers contributed nearly 786,000 hours – that's equal to about 380 full-time paid positions.
• Government grants and private donations total $57.5 million. Of that amount, $26.2 million went to the performing arts, $21.4 million went to other organizations (not including museums) and $9.9 million went to museums.
• Audience spending on restaurant meals, drinks, transportation and admission revenues totaled $86.6 million.
