Former Disneyland Resort head Ed Grier has been named dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business in Richmond, effective March 8.

He will also serve as a business professor at the university, which boasts more than 30,000 students. The School of Business ranks in the top 5 percent of such institutions worldwide.

Grier stepped down from his role as president of Disneyland Resort in October. He originally took over the position in 2006, where he led Disneyland and California Adventure, three resorts and Downtown Disney in Anaheim.

Grier spent nearly 30 years at the $38 billion Walt Disney Co. and held a number of other titles, including executive positions at Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Resort Paris and Walt Disney World in Florida.

Grier was replaced by George Kalogridis, former Disneyland Resort Paris chief operating officer, as president of the Anaheim operations.

Grier's new post is the result of a nationwide search conducted by the school that garnered more than 70 applicants.

"We have worked hard to develop a collaborative atmosphere among our schools of business, engineering and medicine, and Ed Grier instantly grasped the potential of those efforts," says Stephen Gottfredson, provost and vice president for academic affairs at VCU." He has the strong support of the business community as well as the school's faculty and staff."

Among Grier's other work: He served on the board of CHOC Children's, as well as on the California Travel and Tourism Commission and the California Economic Recovery Task Force.
