Some 250 attendees joined the celebration honoring OC METRO's 2010 Green Team Thursday night in historic Hangar 244 at the Orange County Great Park. The event recognized 25 environmentally friendly businesses, groups and organizations.![]() "We're here to celebrate some of the most innovative and committed stewards of the environment – people and companies that are transforming our corner of the world into a healthier, more sustainable region for generations to come," said Steve Churm, OC METRO publisher and CEO of Churm Media, during his opening remarks. This year's mix of honorees included the city of Irvine, Newport Beach's TowerJazz Semiconductor, Tustin-based Nova Vita Salon and Spa, UPS, Poseidon Resources – a firm poised to build the most technologically advanced and energy-efficient desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere – and Waste Management of Orange County."We are not just green by chance," said Michelle Clark, community relations manager at the local agency, "we are green by choice." Clark, who called herself a "glam garbage girl," said Waste Management of Orange County is focused on reducing, reusing and recycling – something that others can strive for in their businesses or personal lives. RipeOrange, Churm Media's marketing, communications and design division, used that theme in the planning of the event, incorporating a selection of organically farmed menu items, natural wood tables, LED lighting and organic herb centerpieces. It's an example of how "small changes can make a big impact," said Churm. "The green movement is really about the future, so let us take the torch and leave this celebration to do our part to color Orange County green." Looking ahead, the SoCal Green Solutions Expo is slated to take place at the Orange County Great Park on Saturday and Sunday, all with the goal of educating local consumers and businesses about the benefits of eco-friendly living. The event, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, will feature the newest green living and home products. Among the highlights: Attendees will get a glimpse of the Green Monster, the fastest veggie car in America, which runs on 100 percent vegetable oil and bio fuel and can break 100 miles per hour. Other features include the opportunity to test-drive hybrid and fuel-efficient cars; segway races; tips on starting a sustainable garden; and information on lowering energy bills through wind-powered technology.
