Henry T. Segerstrom, developer of South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa and founding chairman of the Orange County Performing Arts Center, will receive the Carnegie Hall Medal of Excellence. The award, which will be presented in June, recognizes his leadership in arts philanthropy.

Segerstrom, who currently serves as managing partner at C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, a real estate development and management firm in Costa Mesa, had the vision to develop the South Coast Metro area into the business hub it is today. Nearly 35 years ago, Segerstrom donated a parcel of land as a site for the Tony Award-winning South Coast Repertory.

“Henry’s dedication to developing the unique cultural landscape of Orange County, Calif., as well as his commitment as a champion of the arts has made him the ideal honoree for this year’s medal," says Sanford Weill, chairman of the Carnegie Hall Board of Trustees. "He has also been the driving force in bringing Carnegie Hall’s major international festivals to the West Coast."

In the fall of last year, Segerstrom was instrumental in initiating a new alliance between Carnegie Hall and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Through the partnership, programming from Carnegie Hall's "Ancient Paths, Modern Voices," a celebration of Chinese culture, came to the region, marking the first time the center's live festival offerings reached audiences outside New York City. And, the partnership resulted in bringing ongoing cultural programming to Orange County.

“We at South Coast Plaza have believed in the need for the business community to support the arts,” notes Segerstrom.

He says the bicoastal partnership with Carnegie Hall achieves a "new level of excellence in serving the Orange County community.

"I am deeply honored to receive Carnegie Hall's Medal of Excellence, and look forward to many future collaborations with this great institution," finishes Segerstrom.

The honor will be presented by Weill; 2008 honoree Terry Lundgren, chairman, president and CEO of Macy's; and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger at a June 7 gala atop the Waldorf Astoria Hotel’s Starlight Roof in New York.
