Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian President and CEO Dr. Richard Afable has earned a spot on Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician's list of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives in Healthcare.

Afable was recognized for his strong leadership skills at the Newport Beach-based nonprofit health-care delivery network; the list, which is compiled based on reader votes, is among the highest honors for physician execs and highlights those who have gained the respect of their peers.

"This recognition represents the hard work and dedication of Hoag physicians, nurses and staff, as they are the engine that drives us forward," said Afable, who joined the hospital in 2005.

Under his direction, Hoag has put into place a number of strategies that aim to establish it as a top hospital in the state by 2016. Currently, Hoag ranks among the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide in orthopedic care and cardiac services by HealthGrades. The health-care institution treats nearly 30,000 inpatients and 350,000 outpatients a year; its network includes two acute-care hospitals, seven medical centers and more than 1,300 physicians.

"I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to work with this team," said Afable. "Only with their support can Hoag achieve our vision for the next decade—to deliver the highest quality care to the communities we serve through the integration of our most treasured resources including our people, technology and innovative spirit."
