Santa Ana-based tech distributor Ingram Micro North America expects to see a significant bump in its shipments during the holiday season, and the company is adding nearly 3,000 temporary employees – including 600 in Southern California – to handle the demand.

The company, which serves 150 countries, projects that it will ship nearly 400,000 orders the day after Black Friday – its busiest day – representing an increase of nearly 150,000 orders over last year. Ingram Micro also expects to ship more than 6 million products each week during the peak season. That represents an increase of 2 million products per week over the same time in 2009, according to Ingram Micro.

Top products include HDTVs, laptops, desktops, tablet PCs, e-book readers, computer peripherals and GPS devices, among others. All items move through Ingram Micro's seven advanced logistic centers in the U.S. and Canada, including locations in Mira Loma, Calif., Carrollton, Texas, and Jonestown, Pa.

Temporary workers will help out with picking, packing, gift-wrapping and shipping the packages at the advanced logistic centers. Their employment is expected to run until the end of December.

"Both e-tailers and consumers want to know that the purchased goods will arrive in time for the holidays, making on-time and accurate shipping key," said Terry Tysseland, senior vice president of operations and supply chain for Ingram Micro's North American operations. "With a 99.9 percent shipping accuracy record, we're able to meet demand with teams made up of both seasoned full-time and skilled short-term associates who excel at challenges, are focused at the task at hand and work as one."
