The continued rise is due to a number of factors, according to airport spokeswoman Jenny Wedge. Among them: Virgin America began new service from the local spot to San Francisco last year, offering four flights a day. She also notes that more people appear to be flying in general, compared to the same time last year. General aviation activity increased 8.1 percent in the period. The number accounts for nearly 60 percent of all operations during February. Total aircraft operations also rose 1.8 percent over the month, compared to February 2009. There were 15,734 takeoffs and landings in the period, up from 15,461 last year. Commercial carrier flights remained relatively flat with a 0.5 percent increase, though commuter carrier activity declined by 56.1 percent. Wedge says the decline stems from American Eagle discontinuing its service from the airport to the Bay Area in November, which led to a drop in passengers and flights on a commuter airline. Another factor, she notes, is airlines are using larger air carriers instead of smaller commuter jets.
