JWA adds daily nonstop flights to New York City

The news comes days before the destination celebrates its 20-year anniversary.

Delta Air Lines this week began offering daily nonstop flights between John Wayne Airport and New York City's John F. Kennedy International.

The move comes just days before JWA celebrates its 20th anniversary, and it's the third new city added at the destination this year.

In the spring, Air Canada began service between Orange County and Toronto, and Continental started offering flights to Maui and Honolulu – though trips to the islands will stop Sept. 12. Flights to Honolulu will resume Nov. 20, while service to Maui will begin Dec. 16.

"New destinations mean more options and more convenience for those who travel to and from Orange County," said airport Director Alan Murphy. "The introduction of service to three new cities this year is very welcome news to our customers."

The new service will be offered year round, with one flight arriving and departing per day.

Since its inception in 1990, the Thomas F. Riley Terminal has served more than 150 million leisure and business travelers. The airport currently offers nonstop flights to 20 destinations. It will celebrate its 20th anniversary Sept. 16.
