Kia takes to the links with the LPGA

Irvine-based automaker signs on as title sponsor, partners with Michelle Wie.

Irvine-based Kia Motors America is ramping up its marketing efforts: The automaker will become the title sponsor for the Ladies Professional Golf Association’s inaugural tournament, which takes place next month at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.

The company is also partnering with Michelle Wie, who will be the official golf ambassador and spokesperson for Kia.

The move follows a number of recent initiatives by Kia to expand its footprint and increase brand awareness, including the debut of its first-ever advertisement during the Super Bowl. The company also reported a 10 percent jump in sales last year, compared to 2008, followed by a slight increase in January.

“After our 15th consecutive year of increased market share in the U.S. and as one of only three automotive makers to see an overall sales increase in 2009, it is imperative we continue raising Kia brand awareness with high-profile strategic partnerships that fit with our core values," says Kia Vice President of Marketing Michael Sprague.
