The Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure on Friday will honor 13 local nonprofits with $1.3 million during its annual Community Grants Award Breakfast, which will be held at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana.

The nonprofits, which work with individuals from a range of backgrounds, will use the funds to institute breast health programs and initiatives that support early detection of the disease.

“The grant recipients we partner with are instrumental in helping us overcome language and cultural barriers to address the breast health needs of women in Orange County,” said Lisa Wolter, executive director of the Komen O.C. Affiliate.

The awardees will support the nonprofit's work to offer access to breast health care. Last year, the local arm of the nationwide organization provided more than 9,000 uninsured and underserved women assistance in receiving free mammograms.

“We are so pleased to distribute grants to these organizations that will work with us to provide lifesaving mammograms and bring breast health education and support services to underserved groups in the community,” said Wolter.

In addition, Eileen Freer, the bureau chief for ABC7 Eyewitness News, will emcee the program, and Ron Andrews, CEO of Aliso Viejo-based Clarient, will share the story of his grandmother's battle with breast cancer. A number of breast cancer survivors also will share their experiences.
