More than 2.5 million Southern Californians are expected to travel over the upcoming Labor Day holiday – that's up 11 percent over the same time last year, according to an Automobile Club study.

Despite the year-over-year spike, that figure is still 3.8 percent below the average number of local Labor Day travelers between 2000 and 2009.

Meanwhile, the Auto Club predicts that local travelers will be more likely to drive to their destination this year. Ninety-one percent of travelers – or 2.2 million – are expected to hit the roads. The number is up 11.6 percent from 2009.

An additional 196,000 individuals are expected to fly, up 5.7 percent from 2009.

“Throughout this year, we have seen a steady increase in people making travel plans again,” said Filomena Andre, the Auto Club’s vice president of travel products and services. “The continued theme for this Labor Day weekend is that travelers want to make sure they are getting the best possible value for their money.”

The top destination for local travelers? Las Vegas. The second most popular spot was San Diego, according to a survey of the Auto Club's travel agents.

Statewide, more than 4 million residents are expected to travel, up 11 percent from last year. Nationwide, 34.4 million individuals will travel, up nearly 10 percent from last year.
