Orange County auto sales slump in August

The decline is partly due to last summer's Cash for Clunkers program.

Orange County automakers reported a decline in sales last month compared to August 2009. The reason: Last summer's Cash for Clunkers program provided consumers with an incentive to buy.

However, for the first eight months of the year, brands such as Hyundai, Kia and Mazda saw an uptick in sales over the same period in 2009. Hyundai, for example, is "on track" to set an all-time sales record for the year, according to a statement from the firm.

"Consumer demand for our products remains strong, and as we take aggressive action to increase production of high-demand vehicles and improve dealer supply, we feel we're well-positioned for growth over the remaining four months of this year," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai's vice president of national sales
