Orange County bankruptcies rise 7.4 percent last month

While the number is up over the year, it is down from September 2010.

A total of 1,568 individuals and businesses filed for bankruptcy protection in October, up 7.4 percent over the same time last year. But, the number dropped 10.5 percent from September, according to stats from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California.

The majority of filings last month were Chapter 7. A total of 1,300 were reported in the period, up 8.3 percent from October 2009.

Chapter 13 filings totaled 250 – that number is up 6.8 percent over the same time last year.

Chapter 11 bankruptcies, on the other hand, fell 30.8 percent.

For the entire seven-county district, which includes Orange, L.A., Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura, a total of 12,092 individuals and businesses filed for bankruptcy in the period, up 15.2 percent from October 2009. But, the number dropped from September of this year.
