![]() The Los Angeles-based nonprofit honors those hospitals and organizations that participate in the national Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice, which began in 2003. Seventeen hospitals garnered a donation conversion rate – or the percentage of actual donors out of all potential donors – of at least 75 percent last year. CHOC Children's at Mission Hospital, CHOC Children's Hospital of Orange County, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Saint Joseph Hospital of Orange and Western Medical Center Santa Ana were among the honorees. Both CHOC locations also were recognized for recovering 3.75 or more organs for transplantation per donor. In addition, 10 medical centers were recognized for achieving conversion rates between 65 and 74 percent, including UC Irvine Medical Center, which had the most donors and transplanted organs in Orange County last year. The hospital had 16 donors and performed 56 transplants last year. "The opportunity to save lives through organ donation comes at a time when families face the loss of a loved one, often under sudden circumstances,” said Tom Mone, executive vice president and CEO of OneLegacy. Among the other honorees: Hoag, Western Medical, Saint Joseph and 12 others had 10 percent or more of their cases recovered through donation after cardiac death. And Chapman Medical Center in Orange ranked as one of the facilities with the highest cardiac tissue referral compliance. The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department and five others were recognized for their donation efforts. OneLegacy bestowed the honors during a special ceremony on Wednesday at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. “Thanks to the generosity of donor families and registered donors, and OneLegacy’s collaboration with hospitals and transplant centers, and the skill of OneLegacy’s donation professionals," finished Mone, "people in need of life-saving transplants are better served than ever before.” Related headlines UC Irvine scientists make first complex tissue structure out of stem cells ReVision Optics nabs $35 million in funding St. Joseph Hospital opens 3-D operating room FDA OKs Allergan's bacterial conjunctivitis treatment |
