A number of local hospitals are among 49 Southern California medical centers that garnered recognition from OneLegacy for their support of organ and tissue donations in 2009.

The Los Angeles-based nonprofit honors those hospitals and organizations that participate in the national Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice, which began in 2003.

Seventeen hospitals garnered a donation conversion rate – or the percentage of actual donors out of all potential donors – of at least 75 percent last year. CHOC Children's at Mission Hospital, CHOC Children's Hospital of Orange County, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Saint Joseph Hospital of Orange and Western Medical Center Santa Ana were among the honorees.

Both CHOC locations also were recognized for recovering 3.75 or more organs for transplantation per donor.

In addition, 10 medical centers were recognized for achieving conversion rates between 65 and 74 percent, including UC Irvine Medical Center, which had the most donors and transplanted organs in Orange County last year. The hospital had 16 donors and performed 56 transplants last year.

"The opportunity to save lives through organ donation comes at a time when families face the loss of a loved one, often under sudden circumstances,” said Tom Mone, executive vice president and CEO of OneLegacy.

Among the other honorees: Hoag, Western Medical, Saint Joseph and 12 others had 10 percent or more of their cases recovered through donation after cardiac death. And Chapman Medical Center in Orange ranked as one of the facilities with the highest cardiac tissue referral compliance.

The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department and five others were recognized for their donation efforts.

OneLegacy bestowed the honors during a special ceremony on Wednesday at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.

“Thanks to the generosity of donor families and registered donors, and OneLegacy’s collaboration with hospitals and transplant centers, and the skill of OneLegacy’s donation professionals," finished Mone, "people in need of life-saving transplants are better served than ever before.”

Readers Feedback:

Your story about Organ Donation highlighted the tragic shortage of human organs for transplant operations. Over 50% of the people on the national transplant waiting list will die before they get a transplant. Most of these deaths are needless. Americans bury or cremate 20,000 transplantable organs every year. There is a simple way to put a big dent in the organ shortage – give donated organs first to people who have agreed to donate their own organs when they die. Giving organs first to organ donors will convince more people to register as organ donors. It will also make the organ allocation system fairer. People who aren't willing to share the gift of life should go to the back of the waiting list as long as there is a shortage of organs. Anyone who wants to donate their organs to others who have agreed to donate theirs can join LifeSharers. LifeSharers is a non-profit network of organ donors who agree to offer their organs first to other organ donors when they die. Membership is free at www.lifesharers.org or by calling 1-888-ORGAN88. There is no age limit, parents can enroll their minor children, and no one is excluded due to any pre-existing medical condition. LifeSharers has over 13,900 members at this writing, including 1687 members in California.
