![]() The Picker Institute/Gold Foundation Challenge Grant seeks to change how anesthesiologists are trained, focusing on skills needed to treat patients with compassion in operating rooms. "Research shows a clear connection between patient anxiety and surgical outcome, with high anxiety resulting in greater pain and diminished healing," said Dr. Zeev Kain, chairman of the department and associate dean for clinical operations. The grant will fund Humanism in the Perioperative Environment – a 19-week program that focuses on supporting patients before, during and after surgery. The curriculum incorporates aspects of the department's Wellness Program for first-year residents and the institution's Mind-Body Surgical Preparation Program. The curriculum also meets the goals of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, which sets standards for residency training programs in the U.S. Related headlines Hoag Hospital Irvine opens its doors JSerra Catholic High School launches pre-med program OC METRO, September issue: 'Women's health update' |
