![]() YouTern, which has virtual offices in Irvine, currently serves California and Illinois, and has plans to expand across the country in the next 12 months. “The rules have changed for young talent entering the work force,” said YouTern CEO Mark Babbitt. “Students don’t have jobs waiting for them at graduation and must now plan their career paths years in advance. In our new economy, a career-relevant internship is the key to success.” Entrepreneurial-driven students will be given the opportunity to connect with companies outside of the Fortune 1000 arena with startup executives willing to serve as mentors, said company representatives. More than 100,000 startups are created annually in the United States, and according to a study conducted by the Center for Economic Policy and Research, 45 percent of young adults under 25 were unemployed as of March, a gap the company is hoping to close. Intern hopefuls are matched with companies based on area of study, business category, geography, availability and additional criteria. In the future, YouTern will include embedded social networking, where students will be able to create their own professional networks with peer groups, professors and employers, according to Joe Gagliano, vice president of marketing at the company. “Bring me a quality solution for the entrepreneurial-minded student and I’ll be your biggest champion – this is what students need,” said Don Lubach, assistant dean of students at UC Santa Barbara. Employers may post internships on the site for free through June 15.
